Tax Exemptions

Due to the number and complexity of exemptions, the following is intended only to give you a general guide of what is available. If you think you may be eligible, please call the Assessor's Office to discuss details at 860-844-5311.

Veteran's Exemption

  • Veterans, who served at least 90 days during a time of war, or an active duty servicemen, must prove eligibility by filing the required documentation with the Town Clerk of the town in which they reside on or before September 30
  • Exemption: $1,500 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle

Veterans with a 100% Service-Connected Permanent and Total Disability 

A new statute, PA 24-46, was passed by the State Legislature in the 2024 Legislative Session which provides for a new exemption for certain veterans with  100% service-connected permanent and total disability ratings. 

The Assessor’s Office requires an updated disability rating letter from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs so we can ascertain if you are eligible for the new exemption.  You can obtain a current copy of your VA Benefits Award Letter at www.va.gov, or at www.ebenefits.va.gov or by calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000.

Veteran's Disability Exemption

  • Must file required eligibility documentation with Town Clerk, on or before September 30th
  • Veteran's disability rating slips must be filed by March 31st
    • Disability Rating 10% to 25% - $3,000 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
    • Disability Rating 26% to 50% - $3,750 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
    • Disability Rating 51% to 75% - $4,500 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
    • Disability Rating 76% to 100% - $5,250 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
    • At least 10% Disability and Over 65 - $5,250 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle

Example: $100,000 assessment minus a $3,000 disability rating equals a $97,000 assessment

To calculate taxes, please multiply the assessment value by the current mill rate.

Additional Veteran's Exemption-Income Dependent Portion

Person must meet certain income limits; the filing period is February 1st through October 1st

Exemption: 3,000 off of the assessed value / Regular Veteran's Exemption

  • Disability Rating 10% to 25% - $6,000 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
  • Disability Rating 26% to 50% - $7,500 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
  • Disability Rating 51% to 75% - $9,000 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
  • Disability Rating 76% to 100% - $10,500 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle
  • At least 10% Disability and over 65 - $10,500 off of the assessed value of your real estate or motor vehicle

Local Option Veteran's Exemption - Income Dependent Portion

  • Person must meet certain income limits; filing period is February 1st through October 1st
  • Exemption: $10,000 off of the assessed value

Federal Soldiers' Civil Relief Act

  • Provides that personal property belonging to an active duty serviceman is not to be taxed in the town in which the property is located due to military orders

Motor Vehicle of a Serviceman

  • Exemption of one vehicle registered in Connecticut (Active Duty Military / Reserves)
  • Application must be filed within 15 months of the October 1st assessment date

Totally Disabled Exemption

  • Provides a $1,000 reduction in assessment to Connecticut resident receiving permanent total disability benefits; application form is required

Ambulatory Vehicle Exemption

  • Exemption from taxation for ambulance-type motor vehicles, i.e. specially equipped motor vehicles, used exclusively for transporting any medically incapacitated individual; application form is required

Blind Exemption

  • Provides a $3,000 reduction in assessment to those proving blindness

Elderly and Totally Disabled Homeowner Program

  • Elderly (must be 65 or older) and Totally Disabled Homeowner Program Persons Tax Relief Program
  • Must meet certain income parameters; resident must file between February 1st and May 15th

Farm

  • Application must be filed with the Assessor between September 1st and October 31st

Forest

  • Certified by State Forester before October 1st
  • Application must be filed between September 1st and October 31st
  • 25 acres or more

Open Space

  • Application must be filed between September 1st and October 31st
