1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
It's never too early to start reading to your child! Studies have shown that a child that has been read to is more likely to do better in school - and in later life - than one who has not been exposed to books when young.
Granby Public Library's popular program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, is an easy and fun way to spend time reading together. We provide everything you need. Just call the library to register and schedule a convenient time to stop by for your program information folder. Then start reading together!
As you and your child reach 100 book milestones on your way to 1,000 books, your child will receive small toy prizes and books to keep motivated. And a very special, personalized gift is presented to your child when the goal of 1,000 books is reached!
Program Overview
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your child starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really, if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in 2 years, and 1,095 books in three years! If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years old, you have more time than you think!
How to Participate
Register for the program at the Granby Public Library to gain support and guidance in the process. Call the Children's Room for more information at 860-844-5284.
Read with your child. Studies show that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding. Reading together is fun and will create life-long memories for the both of you.
Keep track of the titles of the books you read with your child. Make a record of your reading in a spiral notebook, online, or with a reading log provided by the library. The journal itself will make a great keepsake item for your child.
If you are able, make sure to keep a record of any book that is being read to your child by anyone - this includes teachers, siblings, and other family members in the process!
